Eric Gomez Ms. Lehmann English 2-1B 3rd December 2019 Does Dorothy Row Give Us An Article Worth The Read? Is the article “With Friends Like These...”, by Dorothy Rowe, worth reading? Does it spike interest in common readers? Personally, it grabbed my attention by first explaining the hardships of friendship. Such as how it may be hard to feel happy, not jealous, for your friend's achievements. The article then smooths into how our friendships are essential to who we are and explainshow they validate us and relate to us in some certain way. Rowe is a psychologist, which explains her purpose in this article. She explains how our friends affect us and the emotional support and possible falling out that comes along with friendship. Rowe’s writing style utilizes her personal experience. She uses first person pronouns, which makes it informal. Since her writing is based on experience, there is no bibliography, making this article too weak for a research paper. Her format is well put together. She uses section titles which are useful and practical. They help with organization and transitionreaders smoothly through her statements. Her main claim is stated early in the article, making it interesting and hooking people in. It hooked me immediately. She talks about how friendships work in some situations, and it is interesting to hear someone else's opinion about them. Not only did she get me hooked, she also caught my eye with her organization. Her section titles make it easier to see where her point stands and help people read through the article quickly. The same principal applies to her introduction and her conclusion; she gets right to her point and ends with it. She ends up giving advice and it ties everything perfectly together. Rowe’s main idea is to show how friendships are essential to who we are and how they validate us and relate to us incertain ways. The only problem is that this is no good for a research paper since her main support is her personal research and professional experience with no outside research. It's good for basic information, though. I liked the fact that Rowe was experienced in what she was talking about. She studied it, and went through it, making the article more understandable. Her claim helps people to view friendships in other ways. she shows us how important friendships are since they help form who we are. In general, I just loved that someone was showing the hardships and positivity in others While also giving advice on how when you lose a friend you still have room to improve, by finding people who share some sort of similarity with you. The people who give you validation are the best people to have because you will see each other as equals and will give you a long-lasting self-confidence despite the difficulties we encounter. “With friends like these...” is all in all a well put together article and is worth the read.
